   There was a particular retailer who was selling this eMachines laptop for just under $300, and at that price, this laptop is an exceptional deal. Much above that price and you should probably look elsewhere.

   As others have said, the show is exceptional – very bright. The keyboard is OK – not fantastic, a bit “spongy” but not terrible. The speakers are dreadful, perhaps the most terrible I’ve ever heard; attaching a pair of cheap USB-powered speakers makes a huge difference when you use it at home.

   The CPU is a standard 2.2GHZ Pentium (Dual Core) T4400, which is a sweet budget CPU (a budget translation of the now-being-phased-out Core 2 Duo CPU). It’s really quite a quick CPU for basic stuff. The thing DOES NOT get hot (compare that to the AMD-based laptops) beyond a small warm on the bottom.

   The two largest downsides (beyond the speakers): only two USB ports and no webcam (even the Acer translation of this laptop that has a webcam curiously has no built-in microphone). So as I said, for the price I paid, I can place up with it.

   One small annoyance I’ve noticed lately: The touchpad is a bit wider than I’m used to, and I seem to rub the left side of the touchpad with my left hand too often, causing the mouse pointer to jump. This seems like a curious point feature of this particular model; when typing on other 15.6″ laptops of this same era, I don’t have this problem.

   RAM is DDR3 despite what official specs say. Simple to upgrade. The wireless card is simple to upgrade as well – you can upgrade it to an Intel 5100 “Draft-N” card that is an exceptional wireless card for $10-$15 on ebay, very worth doing. You can use either a half-height or full-height mini-PCI wireless card in the slot, I’ve used both. SATA hard drive is simple to swap as well – I’ve already done that.

   You can run XP on this thing too if you really want to – but you must first upgrade the BIOS to at least 3.06 (so you have to boot up Windows 7 for that most likely). Then you have to set the BIOS SATA option to “IDE” not “AHCI” and then XP can boot easily (you’ll need drivers from Acer on the Emachines support page for this laptop). I did have distress with Acer’s supplied XP driver for the included Broadcom wireless card – it froze the laptop every time I enabled the card, but as I have since replaced the Broadcom card with an Intel card, I have no problems with wireless in either Windows 7 or XP.

   I bought the Acer Emachine E725-4520 laptop for approximately $350 about 2 weeks ago. My experience with it so far convinces me that it is a excellent buy.

   I am not in the habit of before a live audience games on the machine, but I use it for a suite of Microsoft and equivalent programs. The initial start-up was a bit lengthy, but that was because it was a first time set up. Subsequent start-ups are reasonably quick. The touch pad is responsive when lightly touched. And the machine itself handles tasks lacking the processor being overloaded, based on my monitoring.

   The System Information confirms that the machine is a Pentium dual-core 2.2 GHz unit. The specifications seem similar to the Acer Emachine E525-2200 laptop, which has a Celeron 900 processor and is similar in price. So the Pentium unit seems to be a better deal.

   No backup CD or DVD discs are included. It requires a system backup on 3 customer-supplied DVD discs. This process took about 55 minutes, but it is worth the time should there be problems later and the system software has to be reinstalled.

   It does not have a built-in webcam or microphone. Also the speaker volume is low. But, it includes a CD/DVD burner, which is missing in a netbook. And with a price less than some netbooks, this is a excellent negotiate.

   For a low budget, this is a excellent buy, if you can still get one.

   Since Emachines has been taken over by acer, they run these what i like to call sneak attack sales. There is no warning and no way to really find out unless you run into the listing on Wal-mart or Best Buy, but ordinarily by then its to late. This is an awesome deal, Acers are fantastic, some of the laptops here in the last year or so have been less than stellar but they still sell fantastic, and last a long time. Reason being they took everyone by storm with the netbook, and then bought out gateway and Emachines, so i reckon they lacked a small on there own machines. So onto this one, i got this at Wal-mart for 298, they use to have the one with the Celeron 900 which was suprisingly quick and hard to beat. Well it has been beaten, the price on that one went up to 349, even 449 in some cases and this one probably will. It has a fantastic processor even though its an older dual core its still that(a dual core), fantastic for multiasking or whatever u wanna do really. Upgradable to 4gb is fantastic but i find 3 to be really ample. Also i already have a super powered gaming desktop, so there’s no need really for much more. So yes this can’t be beat, for 298$!! So check out your stores before they disappear as i said by the time they hit the site they are ordinarily gone. I’m outside typing right now using my wireless and it facility flawlessly, no drops, no slow downs nothing! DVD burning is fantastic, made the restore discs in about 45 minutes. Speakers are tiny but loud. And the screen is very bright and simple to see even out here in the sun. I’ve had many people who own Dells, Hps, and Toshiba’s and say this is still certainly there favorite to use, even the pros. I work on computers and i must say i’m really impressed and i may even snag another to keep for backup, for another day or another person. Don’t miss this one, you’ll be missing out huge time. Students especially, its exact for mobility. Btw right now array life is about 3hrs and 25 mins, and i’ve been out here half an hour!

   I picked this up for under $300, lacking even testing it out! I’ve been using it for two weeks and have no real complaints, except that the speakers sound really tinny. Not a problem for me, since this laptop is used mainly for email and websurfing. It seems like a sturdily built, if kind of heavy and cumbersome laptop. Unlike the other reviewers, I found the keyboard comfortable. I have burned some DVDs and had no issues. Windows 7 is a plus, way better than Windows Vista. The touchpad seems more responsive than some others on more pricey laptops. Monitor is okay, a small fuzzier than the pricey machines, but not terrible at all. This would be a fantastic first laptop for anyone. I hope it turns out to be as durable as it feels. I recommend this.
