I bought this computer for gaming, i figured the specs were excellent so i’d get it.(i got mine at bestbuy.) i had it for a few months and then the internet stopped working by the side of with the disc drive and webcam. I brought it into geek squad, they sent it in, a couple weeks later, we called and they said it started over heating on them. After they got that fixed and i went to pick it up they told me they didn’t fix the internet ’cause it was a software problem and was not under warranty. I talked to some of my computer savvy friends and they said it was a mistake to buy a gateway in the first place. Since then other things have gone incorrect with it as well. So overall if you want excellent specs that DON’T last long, this is the computer for you! Also, some of the games i was trying to play at full quality were lacking.. Its running vista at 64 bits which takes up most of the RAM it has.

This computer is downright awesome. Granted, I have had a few problems with it, but… they are all user-caused errors.
If you do have to send this computer in to Gateway, I give you my sympathies. Gateway’s Customer Service is the most terrible I’ve dealt with in a VERY long time. I sent my computer in, and I was told to wait five days for the problem to be fixed. Three weeks later, I get a call telling me it is completed. A week after that… it gets sent by mail to my local Best Buy for pickup. Don’t be alarmed, this was a user caused error. I turned off the computer accidentally during an vital update.
On to the excellent stuff…
This computer runs just about everything I own at maximum settings. The video card [GeForce 9800m GTS] performs superbly. This video card has a dedicated 1GB of memory in a world where 512MB is the norm.
The laptop is also loaded with 4GB of DDR3 RAM. Most computers are set with DDR2 RAM… and even then, 4GB is respectable. This computer’s 4GB of DDR3 is comparable to another computer loaded with 6-8GB of DDR2. As if that weren’t enough, you can also expand this to 8GB of DDR3. To place that in English, this computer has the capability to run pretty much… well… anything on the market.
Another notable feature is the screen. It comes standard with a 1440×900 HD LCD screen. While many games do not even use resolutions up to 1440×900, this large show is very helpful for viewing large pictures and the like. The screen is very nice, and has a strong back-light for before a live audience during the day. There are a few after market screens that you can get as well, one of them being a 1904×1200 HD LCD screen. The computer also has an external HDMI port, just in case you’d like to plug in a compatible HD TV (if 17″ isn’t huge enough.)
There are also two Hard Drive slots, so it is possible to run two Hard Drives simultaneously owing to this computer. While the computer comes stock with a 320GB HD, it is possible to add a second hard drive, or even replace the stock hard drive and run two new ones.
The touch-bar at the top of the instrument panel is also remarkable. First off, it lights up orange for use in the dark. (Very helpful for late-night gaming.) If loaded with any major media player, the button pad will let you skip a track, repeat a track, pause, play, stop any music or video lacking having to re-open the player. For instance, you could be before a live audience a game, and listening to music at the same time. Instead of closing your game to access the media player, you can press any of those buttons.
There are a few minor things to note about the computer as well. The touchpad is nicely placed, smooth, and performs nicely. It also has a “non-stick” feel that the instigator likes more than the glossy/reflective pads used on most HP or Toshiba computers. This computer is also equipped with a full-number-pad. Most laptops do not have a number pad at all. The DVD-drive on this computer is also competent of being replaced with a Blu-ray drive is you so point out.
There are a few problems with I’d like to address, but none are too major.
The first would probably be the heat. If running a new game at maximum settings, after a while, this computer will get HOT. Hot enough that it is nearly impossible to hold your hand next to the side-mounted fan vent. This instigator recommends before a live audience on a desk (but, he does not do that himself). I have been trying to find an after-market fan, but as of yet, no luck.
The second problem is the external volume bar. It is located just next to the Touch Button bar at the top of the keyboard. It apparently uses something similar to a touch-pad. One must slide a finger over the pad to increase or decrease volume. As simple as that sounds, the instigator took a few days to master that.
The third problem is the sheer size of the screen. Seventeen inches is gorgeous. Seventeen inches is downright incredible. Seventeen inches is also a pain in the rear to keep clean. Invest in a dust cloth or something.
The fourth and final problem I have is the number of USB ports. This computer only comes with three USB ports. I personally would have liked four, because of the numerous devices I would like plugged in. But, three is ample for many people.
In conclusion, I’d like to say, “Buy this computer right now.” If you are looking for something by the side of the lines of an Alienware, get this instead. You get better performance, and you aren’t spending a thousand greenies on the name. This computer dazzles. You will get compliments from pretty much anyone who sees it. It looks awesome, and it performs even better. A very excellent deal.

CONS:
Customer Service is second-to-last from none. It downright sucks.
The number of USB slots. (Again… for many, three is enough… I just would have liked more.)
The size of the screen. (One thing I did not mention in the review… 17″ laptop bags are hard to find, and pricey.)
The volume-slider-bar-…thing. I still haven’t completely perfected it.
Perfection in practice:
Macs are known for their media focus, right? Photoshop, Final Cut and the like… right? Well, I guess this is better. My brother and I are both photographers and graphic artists. One day, we were sitting in Best Buy waiting for another computer to come out of repairs. We both had our computers on our laps and were working on Photoshop. My computer, the FX P-7805u, was running the same program next to my brother’s MacBook (his computer cost $50 more.) His, a 15″ screen, and mine, the 17″ screen. There was another person next to us who was watching us work. He had already commented on my “awesome computer” and was now just watching. When I got bone idle, I shut down Photoshop and jumped right into Modern Warfare 2 on maximum graphics. With a whir of the fan, I went from working on Photoshop with better capabilities than a MacBook, to running a strain new game at maximum graphics. The person sitting next to us commented on my computer’s “fantastic graphics”. My brother then started before a live audience the only game he could. An ancient racing game with poor graphics.
So if you want a Mac, get this instead. You’ll have the same capabilities and then some. If you want an Alienware, get this instead. You’ll have the same capabilities, and not have to sell a kidney to afford them.

Bought my machine at the start of the semester so I had very small time to get up and running. Needed Linux as well as Windows, so I reformatted and installed duel boot, but games kept blowing up! Found out there were no recovery disks! You had to get them from this guy who seemed to be subcontracting from Gateway! Even with the recovery in place, the video was still messed up. Had to subscribe to a driver search service to locate them all. Games run for a small while and then the machine seizes and the hard drive starts making a grinding sound. The Gateway website has precisely “0″ (zero) info on how to get support. To this day I don’t have a clue how to call or email them. The warranty has a mailing address only.
So I had to use it as is. It runs, but the video is wacked. Dropped a grand of precious resources and spent weeks dinking with it when I should have been concentrating on my schoolwork. People complain about Asus and MSI’s unknown call centers, but at least they answer the phone. For me Gateway has been a slow grinding hell. The semester is over, I’d like to fix this, but I have no thought how other than to buy a new laptop. I will remember Gateway and tell my friends about them perpetually.

We bought this back in February of 2009 and everything was fantastic until around Christmas when it started beeping. we sent it in and found out it was the harddrive. Long report small we had a new hard drive place in twice and they all went kaputs and now we are taking it in this week for a third time because the hard drive went out again.Luckily it is still under warranty from Best Buy.I reckon I’m gonna stick with Dell…
