My wife & I bought this laptop from Amazon on November 4 to replace a 10 year ancient Thinkpad & supplement another 2 year ancient SONY laptop we own. We are very pleased with the new laptop. It is attractive, easily portable despite its screen size, & appears to have been manufactured with high quality parts & standards, We use it primarily for internet search & email, & are pleased with its speed & ease of use. We have not found Windows 7 to be the fantastic leap forward that most seem to believe, but that is probably because we don’t use many of its facial appearance……..We have rated the new laptop only 3 stars because we believe that many who buy a SONY [at a premium price] expect more in the way of after-the-sale service than they would from most other brands. Unfortunately, that has not been our experience. Just, our 2 year ancient SONY laptop abruptly developed wide white lines on its screen which made it unuseable. Although the warranty had expired, we thought it was reasonable to question SONY if it would help with repairs, particularly after learning that other owners had experienced similar problems. After a series of exasperating & unproductive emails with SONY service, I finally wrote to SONY’s CEO. The employee who responded agreed to pay a part of our $365 repair cost for a replacement screen installed by a local computer shop. That was more than a month ago. We have never received the payment, and our continual followup inquiries by email, fax & phone have gone unanswered…….We chose to buy the new SONY laptop only after SONY agreed to share our repair costs on the ancient laptop. Needless to say, had we known that SONY would not stay on owing to on its word, we would not have done so.

I bought a Sony VAIO VGN-FW280J/H 16.4-Inch Laptop (2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 7200 RPM 320 GB Hard Drive, BD-RW, Vista Premium) Gray, in May 2009 for the excellent price of USD 999.99. I didn’t open the box for about one month, because I have 2 other Laptops an Apple and a HP.
Then I used this Sony for about 2 months as a desktop, but not that much, so I didn’t go or bring this Sony on th go. Then for in some way it builds moisture surrounded by the LCD, I believe due to the hot weather, I contacted Sony Support, they questioned me to send the unit to Sony Repair in San Diego which I did and they received the unit on 10.05.2009. Yesterday on 10.20.2009 at 8 pm I got an email adage that the repair estimate is USD 699.99 plus tax, whaaaaaat?…I called straight away questioned them to send it back, this is crazy…
I just can not believe that this is a SONY, one of the largest company in electronics/multimedia/movie industry.
I will never ever buy a sony anymore…

Whilst gorgeous, the materials used in the construction of this machine are questionable. Within mere months of ownership you will note that the wrist pad, which consumes a large surface area of the machine, will scratch and scuff away leaving black plastic underneath. The reason being is that the outer skin comprises of VERY cheap plastic and NOT magnesium, carbon fibre, steel or any other speechifying quoted by Sony. The screen will also probably fail (check Google).
To top this off ALL Sony Vaio F and FW series machines carry a limited 1 year warranty. Limited meaning that if you buy a machine in the USA, THE WARRANTY WILL BE INVALID OUTSIDE OF THE USA.
WARNING: Do not buy this machine if you require a durable laptop (i.e. one that will last longer than 36months)
WARNING: Do not buy this machine if you are a traveler as it will not be repaired when it fails.
WARNING: Do not buy this machine if you are a non-US resident as it will not be repaired when it fails.
If you require the above, buy a HP as these machines delight in a worldwide warranty.

We ordinarily buy the business line of Sony laptops so this was the first retail model we have bought in many years, so far no complaints, it is pretty quick, well as quick as it can be with Windows 7 anyway. Definately like this model for home use and point work, end user is a graphic designer.

My new PC arrived yesterday. While it is a laptop, it will be used in my office, meaning it will be hooked up to a printer and external drive and other peripherals. This Sony replaces a Toshiba that I was very pleased with, but it was over 5 years ancient, and the new PC has a lot to offer (more RAM, more disc, better graphics card). But, I can only give it 4 stars because the 3 USB ports are all on the right side, at the front. This means that my mouse (yes, I prefer to use one rather than the touch pad, and I’m right-handed) has to navigate around the printer and other wires. I nearly have to unplug everything to load a CD/DVD – the wires are in the way. If the DVD drive and the USB ports had been switched, I would be a very pleased camper. Now I have to choose if this is something I can live with… My Toshiba had the CD drive open toward me – very convenient, and the plugs (power and USB) were all in the back – perfectly out of my way. The next time I buy a PC, I’ll make a point to go see it in person. Sure, the pictures showed me where the ports were, but it’s very different when you have the machine sitting in front of you.
