Warning: No bluetooth! I bought this exact model from JR recently. It does not have bluetooth; it says right on the side of the box in the product description: "No bluetooth."

Another major shortcoming: the keyboard. Many of the keys are not full size (amazingly for a laptop with a 14" screen). Particularly bothersome are the narrow backspace, enter, and right shift keys--especially the right shift key, whose narrowness will surely drive touch typists crazy. There is also a tremendous amount of keyboard flex--the worst of any laptop that I have owned. (I have owned a whole bunch of HP laptops, a couple of Thinkpads, a Toshiba, and a Fujitsu.)

Next shortcoming: fan noise. The fan wails like a banshee when the laptop is on AC power (amazingly for a laptop with a low voltage CPU); it is the loudest laptop that I have ever owned when it's on AC power. (It is still loud, but not as loud, when on battery power.) Actually it's more like a hairdryer, if someone were constantly changing its speed whilst drying hair. It's not just the noise; its the changing pitch of the noise. This happens when surfing the internet--not while gaming or doing something else intensive.

Next shortcoming: Very hot palmrest on the left side--yes, the hottest of any laptop I have owned. You cannot rest your left palm on it for too long before it is uncomfortable.

Good thing about the laptop: the screen is bright and vibrant.

In summary: this thing may seem inexpensive, but it isn't even worth the sale price.

UPDATE: On an MSI user forum I found the solution to the heat and fan noise--resetting the embedded controller (by removing the main battery for five minutes). If I could change the number of stars I would now go up to three stars. The keyboard is still terrible, but with the reduced heat and fan noise the computer is useful in certain situations, kind of like an oversized netbook.

Got a great price. Huge screen, lots of new features like fingerprint id, & bluetooth for the phone. Not crazy about the touch pad or keyboard.
THIS MODEL CAME WITH WINDOWS VISTA. At the time they offered free upgrade to Windows 7. Cool but forget any help with features like fingerprint ID that didn't work properly. Any software troubles, including Acers, cost $59 1/2 hour to talk to consultant. I'm sure you spend lots of time on hold too. Needless to say I never handled the issue.

This was a great deal. I had to get rid of the bloatware, but after that it works pretty quickly. I'm still waiting on the free Windows 7 upgrade, but even if it doesn't come I have no regrets.

Linux works great on this box.

( ubuntu runs about 10 times faster than vista - ordered win7 because I believe it will be faster - but still on the slow side like its big brother vista )

1. First thing I did was pop in ubuntu 9.04 - wide screen requires no configuration - and wireless requires no configuration ( and no problem with verizon router ).

2. Second thing I did was reduce the vista partition to 50Gigs so I could load ubuntu, fedora 11, and RHEL5 in new linux partitions I created - no problem so far.

3. Last the touch pad does all the basics - but will look into extra capabilities.

30% off - all my favorite linux distros work with Acer hardware - this is a nice linux platform. And Acer does not try to be linux ready - so linux does a very good job of detecting the hardware they have installed.

NOTE1: Have only had this Acer for a matter of hours - I will add more Linux comments should I run into challenges or find very nice suprises - but the first blush results are very good for linux on this box.

NOTE2: I use windows 5-10 times a year - and I would have just blown away vista - but the free win7 was a bonus. I blew away Microsoft Office and installed Open Office for no cost from [...] - this will save you hundreds of dollars and do everything 99% of you require. Rather than use virus software I blew that away too - and will just re-install win7 when the ad-ware starts to take over.

NOTE3: acer as8730-6951

100217 UPDATE: after 4 months I am still in love with this system - quiet as a mouse - quick as a cat - and I have Ubuntu 9.10, Fedora 12, Slackware 13 and Win 7 purring and co-existing on this beautiful laptop. I am having a silly problem with the win7 upgrade - every month and a half Microsoft puts a message in the lower right corner of the screen asking if my win 7 is a pirated copy ( or something to that effect ) - I just answer the prompt with the key from my win 7 upgrade provided by Acer - and it goes away again. I do not use win 7 very much so I do not know if this silliness would become a headache with heavy use.

100217 UPDATE: I like linux but the windows 7 OS is just fine - and I use it at work where it is protected from viruses. But do not do an upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 for it will take 24 or more hours - just do the reinstall option and you will be done in a couple - at most. I lost a day of my life experiencing the upgrade.

I got this on sale for around $700 about a 9 months ago and could not be happier. I was initially obsessed with getting a laptop with a dedicated graphics card but found this to work fine with what I use it for which is mainly surfing the web and playing music and video via the hdmi out to my home theater system(this is very versatile). The Blu-Ray player is a great feature as well and plays the movies in pretty good detail. This is also more durable than I thought and has been all over the country with me thrown in to different bags and trunks of cars with no issues at present. I really like the mouse pad this has. It felt a little strange at first but grow on me fast. Most other mouse pads I tried felt sticky or not as tactile, if that makes any sense. The WIFI works great with no issues. I do wish this had an external volume control. You can do this somewhat by using the Fn F3 and F4 keys but its a little more of a hassle. The bloat ware that comes with this is pretty minimal and was easy to get rid of. I was not a fan of the anti-virus this came with and was able to easily remove and put my preferred anti virus software on. The Sony software that came with has been useful and not too much of a resource hog so this was left on. This is my first Sony laptop and I must say I am completely satisfied. I use Toshiba laptops in the past which I was very satisfied with as well. I recommended this to friends who bought them and have been satisfied with this as well. There are definitely better laptops including the newest model of this which has a dedicated graphics card, but probably hard pressed to find one comparable at this price.

I had purchased an Acer 15" AMD Athlon earlier this year to replace my Dell Vostro that over heated and shut down to often. I was very impressed by the 8 hr battery and how cool it ran. I figured the Toshiba satellite would be even better with the Intell processor and Toshiba quality. I replaced th Acer. My toshiba kicked the AMD on windows performance score but overheated. I sold it the second month I had it and went and reviewed the Acer brand again. This model had the Intel processor and 4 gig ram etc. I loved the thing for it ran well a few pauses etc this week. Today it would not boot tried various recovery techniques. None worked so far. I dont like buying a computer that does not have OS on CD or DVD etc. so I am mixed I will try another and see what happens.

My husband purchased this laptop about 6 months ago. Approx 1 month after purchasing it, the computer started to freeze up on us for no reason. We only use the laptop to check emails and surf the web for normal activity so we don't have a lot of data stored or any type of virus. Not only does the computer freeze on us, but the battery life is awful. We're constantly having to use the charger in order to use the laptop - it's ridiculous. Also, the picture quality is bad. I think I would have better luck viewing photos in the dark.

Not ready for Prime Time!

No Support for XP MODE in Windows 7.

The BIOS is for third graders. There is no way to enable VT technology on many ACER laptops, because the BIOS does not show the enable/disable option.

Too much money for a machine that is not ready for Windows 7 and XP MODE.

Very dissapointed in Sony since ive heard such great things about their laptops. Had it for all of 2 weeks before the touch pad froze up and then the entire keyboard froze up. Ended up sending back to Amazon for a refund. It looked good though.
